The Dons suffered their second defeat in a row as they were beaten 20-10 by Newcastle Thunder at the Club Doncaster Sports Village.

The home side started brightly and were almost in for the first try after just three minutes when a swift move saw the ball go out to the right wing but Sam Doherty couldn’t hold on just metres from the try-line.

It was Newcastle though who opened the scoring moments later when Benn Hardcastle threw out a wide pass which Daniel Parker collected and strolled in to score.

They had another try soon after when Derrell Olpherts finished off a flowing move by powering his way over the line under considerable pressure. Hardcastle added the extras to put the Thunder in control at 0-10.

Scrum-half Hardcastle then added to his personal tally by slotting over two drop goals inside the final 10 minutes of the first half to extend the visitors lead.

Newcastle went further in front just after half time when they were awarded a penalty 20 metres out, Hardcastle chose to go for goal and converted with ease to put his side 14-0 to the good.

The Dons twice came close to getting their opening try of the game as Doherty and Connor Scott were denied by strong defence from Jason Payne’s side.

They had to wait until 15 minutes from time before good play down the left eventually saw the ball shipped out to Richie Barnett and the winger powered his way over. Jack Miller added the touchline conversion to further reduce the deficit to 6-14.

Richard Horne’s side then piled on the pressure in search of a second try but couldn’t make it count as Thunder full-back Lewis Young intercepted a pass and raced 80 metres to go over under the sticks. Harcastle added the simple conversion to all but seal the points.

The Dons had the last word with the final play of the game, Tom Carr jinked his way past a number of defenders to slide over and grab a consolation try.
