Kingstone Press League One

Richard Horne grabbed his first points as Doncaster head coach, as the Dons wrapped up an impressive 34-16 victory against Oxford at the LD Nutrition Stadium.

A hat-trick from Sam Doherty and two tries from Jack Miller helped Doncaster to overcome their League One opposition.

Oxford got play underway at Post Office road and the Dons opened the scoring on the first set. Reece Dean hit a perfectly timed kick into the corner which fell into the hands of winger Doherty, who touched down to make it 4-0 to Doncaster after a minute of action.

It didn’t take long for the Dons to be in again this time when hooker Kieran Cross broke through the heart of the Oxford defence, swan diving under the sticks to make it 8-0. Miller converted 10-0.

Doherty then scored his second try of the game when Dean palmed off two defenders and looped a pass to Doherty who was waiting on the right wing and raced over to make it 14-0 after eight minutes.

Doncaster continued to dominate the opening proceedings when they scored again, this time through Miller who put in a grubber kick that deflected off an Oxford defender before touching down. Miller converted his own try to make it 20-0.

Second Rower Brad England extended the Dons’ lead to 24-0 when he rushed 20 metres past the Oxford defence and dived over despite having two opposite defenders on his back.

The visitors finally got on the scoresheet thanks to winger Jordan Gill, who weaved his way past multiple Doncaster defenders to dive over in the corner to make it 24-4.

Miller then grabbed his second try of the match after two repeat sets and forced his way though to make it 30-4.

Oxford scored the final points of the first half when Will Cook rolled over the try line to make it 30-8.

Half Time: Dons 30-8 Oxford

The visitors had the real first chance of the half in the 55th minute, when a series of offloads found winger Adam Dent, who knocked on thus giving possession back to the Dons.

It took until the 68th minute for the first points of the half to go on the board.

It was the hosts who scored the first try of the second half thanks to Doherty who powered through the Oxford defence to touch down for his hat-trick.

Oxford scored their third try of the game moments late when  Jordan Gill crashed over the line to make it 34-12.

Marcus Brooker scored the last try of the game for the visitors with just a minute left, when he pushed through the Dons defence and diving down on the left hand side of the posts.
