Richard Horne was delighted to get his first points as head coach of the Dons, after his side beat fellow Kingstone Press League One outfit Oxford 34-16 at the LD Nutrition Stadium.

The 34-year-old had suffered defeats to rivals Whitehaven and Newcastle in the Dons’ last two outings, but a 34-16 win over Tim Rumford’s side has boosted Horne’s’ spirit, but he was disappointed with his side’s second half performance.

“I am very happy to get off the mark, however I am a bit disappointed of our overall performance because we set off like a house on fire,” he said.

“We need to make sure that we carry the first 20 minutes of the game over the to the whole of the South Wales game, but all the boys are disappointed with the second half performance as they knew it was a good opportunity to score some points.

“You could say a bit of fatigue creeped into the play in the second half but in my eyes the game was not that quick, it was very stop-start and a very tactical performance in the second half from Oxford.”

The Dons only managed to add four points after the restart, and Horne wants his side to take the first 20 minute performance against Oxford, into the 80 minute game against South Wales on Sunday.

“We knew we would win if we turned up with the right attitude, and we thankfully did turn up with the right attitude,” he said.

“It’s just a shame that we couldn’t keep that attitude up throughout the whole 80, but we move onto the South Wales game.”
