Winger Sam Doherty grabbed a hat-trick as the Dons ran out 34-16 winners overs Oxford RL at the LD Nutrition Stadium.

The 24-year-old touched down twice in the opening 10 minutes of the game before adding another in the second half.

But Doherty says that getting back to winning ways was the most important outcome.

“I have only scored two all year so it was nice to get three again, a big part of the hat-trick has come from Reece Dean who put two lovely kicks across the field and I just followed it up,” he said.

“It was important to get back to winning ways as we do not want to get into a rut, it was a long days as the lads have been at work too , so getting two points is the most important thing.

“It was a nice feeling to get back amongst the tries as its been a frustrating season for me so far but I was happy to get across the line and hopefully I can catch up to Jason Tali.”

The Dons have are due to play South Wales Ironmen on Sunday to complete a gruelling three games in seven days schedule, but Doherty believes the team can get the desired victory next time out.

“Tiredness kicked in during the second half as we were going up hill too but we managed to get the two points which is all that matters at the end of the day,” he said.

“Fair play to Oxford though, they came back at us in the second half, they are a tough bunch and a lot of them are from Castleford who are a tough group but I am glad we overcame them.

“We head to South Wales next and games like them, which we are expected to win are usually the most difficult but if we preform like we did in the first half today we will be fine.”
