Doncaster RLFC head coach Richard Horne feels it's important to start the 2019 pre-season with positive ambitions as the Dons face off against Super League opposition Hull FC in their opening friendly.

The Dons will play three friendlies against some of the highest ranked sides in rugby league with Hull FC, Leeds Rhinos and newly promoted London Broncos travelling to the Keepmoat Stadium this season. Horne feels it is an exciting opportunity playing these type of matches.

"It always helps playing against teams that are in a full-time environment," Horne expressed. "Because they get to practice and execute everyday so if we're doing our jobs, coping and competing with teams that do that, I'll be more than happy.

"I'm not focussing on the result, I want to see the boys showing energy and getting more of it in collisions and getting their bodies ready for round one, which is what it's all about"

Horne and his coaching staff have put the squad through their paces ahead of the start of the season with extensive sessions in preparation for a tough year ahead.

"The boys are where we want them to be at this point in pre-season, we've got a couple of friendlies coming up with Hull, Leeds and London Broncos which our boys will have a good hit out in. We've also got about two or three weeks before the season starts after that, so we have period of time where we can focus on a few areas we need to work on before our first game.

"Hull have a mixed bag, they have some younger lads playing so again it levels it out and makes it a little bit more of an even playing field, instead of them having their top boys out there. But it will still be a really good challenge for us to see where we are at against full-time athletes who are training every day, against our boys who go to work then come and train. They have been working really hard and they are looking forward to the game.

"It's all about us and the little areas where we have been practising in the lead up until Christmas, which is a lot more on the defensive side of things than with the ball in hand. I want to make sure around the ruck area we are really tight in with our wrestle and we are hitting, sticking and doing a good job.

"I'm not focussing on the result, I want to see the boys showing energy and getting more of it in collisions and getting their bodies ready for round one, which is what it's all about."

Tickets are available now for the visit of Hull FC to the Keepmoat Stadium which can purchased via the Club Doncaster Box Office on 01302 762576, or from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
