Dons forward Brandon Douglas said his side must take the positives following their opening pre-season friendly defeat to Hull FC at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Dons were left short of players after injuries took it tole on Richard Horne's squad, but the former Castleford youngster felt that even with a small squad the Dons can take a lot of belief from the performance.

"It was a very tough day but we can take  alot positives from it. I know people may look at the scoreline and wonder what has happened, but leading in to the game we had two late pull outs before we even started so that was tough to take. The lads showed real determination in the game so it isn't all that bad," he said.

"There was a lot of great young talent in the Hull FC team and we should be pushing ourselves to be like those players, because they are Super League players at the end of the day, we have to take what we can from the game and move on."

Hull FC took an early lead in the tie and the full time outfit continued to increase their grip on the game, but Douglas admitted after the game that head coach Richard Horne didn't want his players to dwell on the result, but take the best from their performance.

"We've mainly taken the positives out of it, obviously it would be easy for Rich to shout at us but we have taken the positives," he added.

"We will recover up, our bodies will be sore going into next week but it's our first game, we've blown off a lot of cobwebs and it's great to be back playing. It's always good to get playing but we have to take the positives from what has happened."

Sunday's match was Douglas' first taste of action in a Dons shirt following an off-season move from Castleford Tigers after impressing with Betfred Championship outfit Halifax, and an impressive debut saw him open his account for his new team with the opening try for the home side, something in which he was delighted with.

"It was very nice, it's always nice to score I don't get too many chances but it is nice to get over. We like to throw the ball about a little bit and it's a lot of hard work down the middle, obviously I'd like to score, but if it doesn't happen I'd like to help the other lads get over the line."
