Richard Horne says the Dons’ trip to Catterick was a good test of the players’ character when put into tough situations.

The squad spent two nights at the army camp and tested their resolve with several tasks, and the head coach was impressed with the group’s battling spirit.

He said: “The trip was a physical one, they were put through their paces and had to be sleep deprived at times which was good.

“We squeezed in a lot in the two days we were there, they wanted the boys to experience what they go through throughout the week.

“You can see their character and how they react when things go against them, which is needed on the rugby field.”

With two weeks to go until the Betfred League One opener, Horne says the squad are looking fresh with bodies returning from injury.

He added: “We still have a few bumps and bruises but there’s nothing major apart from the lads who we know we’re missing until the season gets underway.

“It’s good to have a lot of options and we’re focused on that first league game, the boys got minutes into them during pre-season.”
