The Dons put in a spirited display but were beaten 62–6 by Coral Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons in the south of France.

Richard Horne’s side started well but went behind with nine minutes gone, as Sam Tomkins’ kick through fell into the hands of Brayden Williame who touched down.

They responded almost immediately though as an attack down the right saw Jordan Howden place a kick through, and Connor Bower got up highest to score. Matty Beharrell converted to level the scores.

The Dragons went back in front as the game approached the half-hour mark, with former Widnes man Matt Whitley getting the ball down after a delicate kick from Lucas Albert.

They scored again with a few minutes of the half remaining, when Jason Baitieri took advantage of some tiring Dons defence to score from dummy-half. Tony Gigot’s conversion put the home side 18-6 up at half-time.

Catalans came out of the blocks quickly in the second-half and had three tries in the first 10 minutes after the break. The first came when the ball was moved out quickly to the left and Whitley was the man in space to score his second.

Papua New Guinea outside-back David Mead then scored a quick-fire double, the first came when he supported a break from Julien Bousquet to cruise over. He then glided through a gap in the Dons’ defence to secure his second of the game in the space of three minutes.

Williame then went over for his second, after he latched onto Gigot’s pass following a smart offload from Whitley to create the chance.

The points kept on coming for the Dragons and Fouad Yaha was the next to get his name on the scoresheet, as he raced free down the left to score in the corner.

The French winger then went from scorer to provider, as he found the supporting Gigot on his inside to extend the lead further.

Williame then completed his hat-trick with 13 minutes remaining, when he collected the ball from a scrum and fended off a challenge to go over. He got his fourth in the next set, as he got to the ball before the dead-ball line after a kick through from Kenny Edwards.

Yaha completed the scoring late on, as a bobbling ball across the field fell into his hands for him to put the ball down in the corner.
