Dons head coach Richard Horne was pleased with the character his side showed after a 10-try haul on the road at Coventry Bears.

The Dons recovered from back-to-back last-minute defeats in league and cup with a 54-10 win over Coventry at Broadstreet, and Horne felt his side bounced back superbly in tough conditions.

“It was a very pleasing result here, especially after the week that we’ve had with two late defeats and having to bounce back from that, mentally, coming into this game, it was tough to get them up from that, but the lads showed real professionalism here,” he said.

“We went about things the right way and picked up a really good result on the road, it was good to get a couple of tries on the board early and pick up a bit of momentum, we knew as the game ticked towards the end fatigue would set in but the boys managed it well.

“The heat made is difficult for both sides to maintain their energy levels, but the performance on the whole was good from us, we spoke about getting the game wrapped up early and we’ve done just that.”

17-year-old Kieron Lawton scored the Dons’ final try of the afternoon on his league debut for the club, and Horne was quick to praise the youngster for his effort. He hopes it will encourage everyone in the squad to carry on pushing each other in the search for promotion from Betfred League One.

“Kieron had a good debut against Sheffield and that was enough for him to warrant staying in the side here, he had a couple of errors early but he’s young, he’s 17, he’s physically there, he just needs to improve confidence wise, and the try will do him a lot of good,” he added.

“We’ve got some boys that are really starting to find some form for us at just the right time, the challenge goes out to them, as well as the rest of the squad, to maintain that and kick on as the league is our only focus now and it is so tight from top down to around seventh.

“It’s a very close competition and I’m sure there will be a lot of twists and turns between now and the end of the season, it’s all to play for. We need to focus on what we’re doing and we’re doing it well, so hopefully the results can follow off the back of that.”
