Jordie Hedges felt the Dons showed a real mental toughness to get past the last seven days and gain a vital win on the road at Coventry Bears in Betfred League One.

The Dons recovered from home defeats to Newcastle Thunder and Sheffield Eagles with a 54-10 win away at Coventry, and Hedges says the squad’s disappointment from thoset games really spurred them on to get the victory.

“We’re all delighted to get the result here, especially after the disappointment we’ve had over the past couple of games, that’s massive for us and I think we played really well against a tough side,” he said.

“To lose two games so late on as we had done in the build-up to this was tough for us to take mentally, but we had a real focus to come here and get the win and we’ve done just that.”

Hedges grabbed two tries in the win over the Bears after a couple of brilliant bursts through the Coventry defence, but it was the two points in the race for promotion from League One that pleased him more.

“I took the opportunity when it arrived to me, so it’s pleasing on a personal level to get a brace, but I always look at it from a team perspective and it’s a great performance for a crucial two points,” he added.

“We spoke about how difficult the conditions were going to be throughout the week, but we managed to keep control of the ball like we said we would, and we responded really well to going down to 12 men in the second half.

“We didn’t let anything affect our own game, we gave it a really good go and got our rewards, we’ll look to draw on that again next week too when we have a long trip across to West Wales.”
