PREVIEW | Horne: play-off one to look forward to

27th September 2019

Richard Horne wants his team to play the game and not the occasion when they take on Newcastle Thunder this weekend.

The Dons travel to Kingston Park for the preliminary play-off final, knowing a win would take them to within 80 minutes of a place in the Championship.

He said: “It’s elimination rugby now and we know we’ll either be heading to a final or the season will be over, it’s a case of getting everybody ready for it.

“The challenge is the pressure and we know there isn’t a second chance anymore, it will be a nervy game and nobody will want to make an error.

“The play-off games have shown which team settles into their game plan quicker normally comes out on top at the end of it so the focus is on a good start.”

With Oldham awaiting the winner of Sunday’s tie, Horne thinks his side have learnt from last year’s disappointment at the same stage of the season.

He added: “Our defence has been good in the main we just did too much of it last weekend, Oldham didn’t really break us in terms of the system they just punished us when we were under fatigue.

“We want to be in the final as much as anybody and there will be two teams going together looking to take one step closer to the Championship.

“We learnt lessons from where we went wrong at this stage last year, we turned the ball over cheaply which at this stage of the season can’t happen.”
