NEWS | Horne: we'll come back stronger

Richard Horne felt his side left themselves with too much to do in the 34-6 defeat at Newcastle Thunder in the Betfred League One preliminary final.

The Dons’ 2019 campaign came to an end with the loss at Kingston Park, and the head coach says a poor start cost them.

He said: “We gave ourselves too much to do and they made us pay for a slow start where we conceded a couple of tries.

“Their speed in the ruck hurt us and when you do a lot of defending on your own line it takes it out of you when in possession.

“We will assess it and see where we improve from here on in, we know that it’s two semi-final defeats in a row now which is disappointing.”

With plans now underway for recruitment and retaining players for next season, Horne says they will work hard on building a squad capable of pushing for promotion in 2020.

He added: “We’ll have a sign off with all the boys this week and then work hard on bringing people in, we know the areas we need to improve.

“There is work that needs to be done and we’ve got the time to do it, the boys will have a break and then we’ll be straight back into it in a few weeks time.”
