REPORT | Dons 31 Hunslet 10
The Dons secured progression in the Betfred League One play-offs with a 31-10 victory over Hunslet at the Keepmoat Stadium.
A double from Brandon Douglas, along with tries from Sam Smeaton, Liam Johnson and Jake Sweeting sealed the win for the Dons.
An early 40/20 put the visitors in a good position and they took full advantage, as Wayne Reittie collected Dom Brambani’s kick to the corner to open the scoring.
The Dons responded six minutes later when some good play led to Sam Smeaton crashing through a gap to score. Matty Beharrell’s conversion levelled the scores.
The home side went in front for the first time with almost a quarter of the game gone, when after some sustained pressure Brandon Douglas forced his way over from close range.
Beharrell almost added an extra point three minutes before half-time, but his attempted drop-goal bounced back off the crossbar.
They weren’t down for too long though as one point was turned into six just before the hooter, as Liam Johnson continued his impressive try-scoring form to extend the lead and give his side a 18-6 lead.
It was a tight opening to the second period with opportunities hard to come by for both sides.
The Dons came closest as Ross Whitmore was tackled a few metres short of the line following breaks from Danny Bravo and Aaron York.
The next point came via the boot of Beharrell as he kicked a drop-goal with 14 minutes left on the clock.
And it was the Dons who would grab the first try of the second-half too, when Jake Sweeting intercepted a pass close to his own line and raced the length of the field to score.
The scoring wasn’t finished there as Douglas made a great run down the middle, he broke through the line and had the pace to go over for his second of the game.
Matty Chrimes grabbed a late consolation against his former club but it was the Dons who progressed and set up a play-off tie at North Wales Crusaders next weekend.
